School History

The Affiliate Spanish Language School (ASLS) in Madrid has been teaching Spanish to foreigners for over twenty-five years.

The school is accredited by the Insituto Cervantes and since 1998 holds the CEELE Quality Seal. On average, the school has about eight hundred students per year. The school is known to be a quality educational center that has earned a prestigious international reputation for its educational know-how and professionalism.

As reported by the Director, the major nationalities represented are the following.

- 50% German, Austria & Switzerland
- 30% UK, USA, Canada & Australia
- 10% Italian and
- 10% Other

Our ASLS in Madrid is whole-heartedly committed to social, educational and environmental inutilities. The school reports that it gives 7% of it's total revenue to non-for-profit organizations (NGO) around the world. One of the school's partnerships is with the NGO Ayuda en Acción.

School Location

Madrid is the capital city of Spain. It is known as being the center of economic and political activity of the country, and the gateway to the Hispanic world. While Madrid possesses a modern infrastructure, it has preserved the look and feel of many of its historic neighborhoods and streets.

The school is found in the heart of Madrid’s “Writers’ District” a special place where Quixote was conceived and born. This was a meeting place for writers, actors and the socialites of the Austrias district – the creative forces behind the Spanish Golden Century.

It is also close to the Parliament, the Retiro Park, the Prado Museum, the Reina Sofía Modern Art Museum and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Gallery.

The School

The school occupies one floor of a large 19th century palace. Students will happily find a spacious patio in the center of the building where students and staff often meet, mingle and enjoy the fresh air - in the heart of Madrid.

The building/palace has a lot of attractive features and good vibrations, which makes the environment ultra-conducive to learning and enjoying life.

Some examples of the attractive features are the high ceilings, vibrantly colored walls, hardwood floors, wood trim, natural light throughout, and a breathtakingly beautiful staircase at the entrance.

The school has fourteen classrooms that all have audio/video connections. The maximum number of students per group class is ten, but the average is five to seven. With that said, you are guaranteed to receive personal attention from each Spanish language teacher in every class. Persons with mobility challenges have access to classrooms and the overall school facility.

Technology

The ASLS in Madrid offers all students WiFi Internet access anywhere on the premises. In addition to WiFi, there is a computer room with more than five computers that all have high-speed Internet access (there is no charge for Internet access at the school).

The school incorporates computer-based learning activities as well as interactive audio-visual learning tools.

For a fee, students can make international phone calls or faxes from the school. Students can also buy international phone cards at the school at a discounted price. There is a printer that can be used by all students.

Close by, students will not have a problem finding Internet cafes. One can expect to pay ~ 1.50 euros per hour at a local Internet cafe.

Cultural and Social Learning Activities

The cultural program takes place in the afternoon, after Spanish classes. This program forms an integral part of the Spanish immersion experience. The objective of the cultural program is to give the students a broad vision of Madrid, its inhabitants, and culture. You are sure to see, do and experience a lot!

Madrid is a perfect city for those who love the metropolis, and a diverse population of people from around the world. The cultural program offered at our ASLS in Madrid is fantastic! It includes everything from visits to amazing museums, ethnic restaurants and other cultural and historical sites.

The cultural program is well organized and detailed. You are sure to see, do and experience everything you could have imagined.

This is a general idea and description of some cultural activities that students experience while in Madrid.

* Monday: 16:30 pm - 18:00pm
- Guided walk through modern Madrid to experience the sights, sounds and smells.

* Tuesday: 16:30pm-18:30pm
- Visit to a local Radio Station to see how they do it in Madrid!

* Wednesday: 16:15pm - 17:45pm
- See a amazing Flamenco Show at a local theater!

* Thursday: 16:30pm - 18:00pm
- Students can view art and socialize at the famous Prado Museum.

* Friday: 20:30pm - 22:00pm
- Tonight will be film night for the students (Spanish & English movies will be viewed).

* Saturday: All day guided excursion to Toledo
- Students must pay small fees for entranced and for transportation to these activities, events and museums.

Internship Opportunities in madrid

The overall goal of this internship program is twofold. First, the students will improve their knowledge and skill of the Spanish language. Second, students will work for a company in Madrid to gain professional experience in today’s international workplace and form international networks for possible future business opportunities. Students will be placed in companies according to their abilities, interests and field of study and/or professional experience.

Students who participate in the program must be functionally fluent, responsible, culturally sensitive, willing to work hard and able to work independently.

Course Summary

To be selected as an ASLS, the school must offer classes that primarily focus on developing the students' communicative skills. Before departure, students will take a written Spanish level test and receive course confirmation documents and homestay family information.

Don't fret, a Spanish Por Favor representative will mail these documents to you four weeks before your departure date. The completed test must be returned to SPF two weeks prior to starting the course. Your achievement on the test will determine your appropriate language level.

The classes are organized into small groups with a maximum of 10 students per class (the average group class size is about five to seven students). The classes are held in large, bright, temperature-controlled and pleasant classrooms, where the atmosphere is relaxed and laid-back. Spanish courses consist of four, five or six 45-minute classes per day and are given from Monday to Friday, from 9:30 to 2:30. Teachers are rotated, but students can choose to stay with the same teacher. Spanish Por Favor recommends that students change at least once a week to increase their exposure to different teaching styles and personalities.

Intensive and Super-Intensive: These courses are guaranteed to achieve excellent language results, combined with free time. All levels, all year long. Four (Intensive) and Six (Super-Intensive) lessons day, in a group per week.

Absolute beginners should only start on the first and third Monday of each month. Students with previous knowledge can start every Monday.

Spanish Course with Internship: This is an opportunity not only to improve language skills, but also to gain professional experience in today’s international workplace. The Internship Program takes place throughout the year and is two months minimum in length, of which the first four weeks will consist of an intensive Spanish language course. The remaining time will be spent at the internship. This combined programs includes the traditional Spanish Group course for 4 weeks + the Internship. The student must commit to staying in Madrid for a minimum of 2 months to work. Students can continue taking Spanish classes and work, but must commit to taking 4-weeks of Spanish classes.

One-to-one Spanish Courses: The most effective way to achieve ones goals in a limited amount of time while enjoying a class made to fit the needs of the individual. You can determine the content of your class, from business lessons to any specific theme. From 1 week with 4, 6 or 8 individual lessons a day. The student determines length, dates and number of classes. Optional: teacher-accompanied lunches.

Group Program: The group program consists of Spanish classes combined with different cultural activities that requires the use of the target language. In addition, it includes the organization of the lodging with Spanish families in double rooms with half-board (breakfast and dinner). Past groups that have participated have been families, high school groups and college student groups, employees and church groups.

Groups are required to arrive on Sundays and airport pick up is included in the price. The school bus will bring the group directly to the school, where they will have a short orientation. Some groups come with specific objectives, Spanish content they want to learn. This is no problem. The school staff can design and tailored a specific program to me the needs of the group. Teachers

There are over ten Spanish language teachers at our ASLS in Madrid. All of the teachers at our ASLS hold university degrees and have successfully completed a rigorous training course that prepares them to teach Spanish to foreigners.

All of the teachers have over two years experience teaching Spanish as a second language and most have over ten years experience.

Our ASLS in Madrid's top-priority is to enable the student, through excellent instruction and technique, to speak Spanish well.

From day one, students will receive Spanish classes with clear and concise objectives. As you learn more and move forward, you will set and meet certain established goals. You will see your progression and will be able to measure it.

Additional Information

All students receive a orientation when they arrive at the school. After this, students will take a written and verbal examination to identify their appropriate language level.

This test usually takes thirty to forty-five minutes to complete. After establishing your appropriate language level, you will be placed in the appropriate class.


After you have completed your Spanish immersion experience, you will be asked to fill out a satisfaction questionnaire to critique your teachers, homestay family and overall classroom experience.

The school reports that the average age of the students is 24 to 28, although often there are students as young as 17 and as old as 75.

The majority of the students are young, professional people who need Spanish to develop their careers. However, a large proportion of students are still full-time students in their own countries and an increasing number of people are simply learning Spanish as a hobby.

After you have completed your Spanish immersion experience, you will be asked to fill out a satisfaction questionnaire to critique your teachers, homestay family and overall classroom experience.

mADRID - price points

Prior to departure, students must pay a $99 enrollment fee and deposit to reserve a seat. All homestay accommodations (to live with a native family) start on Saturdays and end on Sundays. The airport pickup service is optional, but highly recommended. Price points are quoted in Euros.
