School History

Spanish School in Mexico City

Our Affiliate Spanish Language School in Mexico City, International House Mexico City, was established in 1998 with “the mission of teaching languages with the best quality and customer service in the country.”

The school is internationally known and is the only Spanish language school in “Colonia Condesa”, one of the most fashionable and modern neighborhoods of Mexico City. Business professionals and students from across the globe have studied Spanish here.

The school also teaches English as a second language, and there are countless opportunities to converse in Spanish with the native Spanish-speaking students. These cross culture/language interactions are called Conversation Exchanges. The school can organize these and they are a great way to practice Spanish and to teach English. The conversation Exchanges typically last for thirty minutes.

School Location

Learn Spanish in La Condesa, Mexico City

Colonia La Condesa has exploded remarkably in the last few years. The neighborhood is home to over 100 new restaurants, bars and cafes, as well as bookstores, boutiques, internet cafes and houseware stores.

Mostly youthful, many of the La Condesa’s residence are: actors; painters and writers; journalists; models and their agents; graphic designers and people in advertising. La Condesa has been compared to SoHo in New York City or to the Barrio Latino in Paris.

At La Condesa’s center are two of Mexico City’s loveliest parks (Parque México and Parque España), tranquil tree-lined streets and many charming examples of Art Deco architecture.

The School

Learn Spanish in Mexico City.

The school is housed in a beautiful building, reminiscent of a castle. It is located next door to the Guatemalan embassy on Alfonso Reyes Road. It is listed as a National Heritage site, which makes it a brilliant cultural center.

There are 10-classrooms, which are not air-conditioned. However, all classrooms have windows, so fresh air and a nice breeze is commonplace. There is a vending machine on the second floor so students can enjoy food and beverages during breaks and before and after class.

There is a spectacular patio on the top floor where classes are held and where students and staff go to mingle. The facility is spacious and the exposed brick, winding staircase, high ceilings, and wood finishes make this school a fantastic choice for immersion education!

Cultural and Social Learning Activities

Every week our ASLS in Mexico City holds social activities at the school, which are included in the price of tuition. All students are given a copy of the planned two-week schedule on their first day of class.

The following is a typical schedule for the social activities program. On Mondays, the school holds a “Welcome” orientation for all new students. The students learn about what to expect, receive maps and guides of local attractions, and take a walking tour of the surrounding neighborhood. On Tuesdays, the school holds a traditional Latin American dance class. Salsa anyone?

On Wednesdays and Thursdays there are no formal social activities planned by the school, but students can create their own. You can explore the city, get lost, and use your Spanish to find your way home. Fridays, the school holds a Mexican cooking class. You can learn a new dish or two and impress your friends and family when you return to your home country.

There are no formal classes on the weekends. Most students travel within the country to historical sites to learn about the country and culture, but I always go to the beaches.

The school can organize weekend excursions for students. These excursions are optional and not included in the price. The school staff will help all students plan their own social activities if they want to do something extra like go to a movie, a nightclub or listen to live music.
